Description:
The University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography welcomes Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce and South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce members to network “among the world’s oceans” in its new state of the art $20-million Ocean Science and Exploration Center and Pell Marine Science Library. The centerpiece of the 41,000 square-foot facility is the Inner Space Center, which employs satellite and Internet2 technology to enable scientists and students at URI and around the country to participate in ocean-going research expeditions without going to sea. The Center, headed by Robert Ballard, URI professor of oceanography who discovered the wreck of the ocean liner Titantic, features displays of 2,800-year-old antiquities raised from the ocean’s floor during the course of Ballard’s underwater archaeological expeditions. Chamber members will be greeted with a majestic lobby that extends from the front door to the two-story windows overlooking an expanded quadrangle and the stunning views beyond of Narragansett Bay and Jamestown. Tours of the Inner Space Center will be provided.
